Participants will learn how to set up Copilot, generate code from prompts, and use it for tasks like testing, refactoring, and documentation. The training includes hands-on exercises and real-world examples in language(s) that will be defined based on the participants background. It also covers best practices, ethical considerations, and team usage. Ideal for developers looking to improve speed and quality using AI pair programming.

Scope

1. Getting Started with
GitHub Copilot
  • What is GitHub Copilot?
  • How it works (Codex model, context, limitations)
  • Supported IDEs: VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains
  • Installing and activating Copilot
  • Demo: generating functions from comments
2. Copilot for Everyday
Coding Tasks
  • Writing code from docstring/comments
  • Completing loops, conditionals, and class structures
  • Generating boilerplate code quickly
  • Hands-on: Development example using only prompts and Copilot completions
3. Copilot for Refactoring, Documentation and Testing
  • Refactoring existing code using prompt-based guidance
  • Generating and completing documentation blocks
  • Hands-on: Refactor legacy code and generate tests using Copilot
  • Writing unit tests with Copilot (optional)

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the course participants will be able to:

  1. Configure and effectively use GitHub Copilot within their preferred IDE
  2. Accelerate development through intelligent code completion and boilerplate generation
  3. Refactor existing codebases using AI-assisted suggestions
  4. Produce documentation and unit tests with AI support
  5. Apply best practices for safe, ethical, and team-based AI pair programming
