Role Summary
A Backend Developer is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the server-side logic, APIs, databases, and integrations that power applications. They ensure high performance, reliability, scalability, security, and clean integration with front-end systems and third-party services. Backend Developers work closely with cross-functional teams—Front-End Developers, DevOps Engineers, QA, Product Owners—to deliver robust digital products end-to-end.
Key Responsibilities
- Application & API Development
- Design, implement, and maintain RESTful or GraphQL APIs.
- Develop server-side logic using modern backend frameworks and languages (e.g., Java, J2E, SpringBoot).
- Ensure code is clean, maintainable, testable, and follows established coding standards.
- Database Design & Data Management
- Model, create, and optimize relational and/or NoSQL databases.
- Write efficient queries, stored procedures, and data access layers.
- Ensure data integrity, indexing, performance optimization, and security compliance.
- System Architecture & Scalability
- Contribute to the design of scalable, distributed, and event-driven architectures.
- Implement microservices, messaging queues, and asynchronous processing where appropriate.
- Support architecture discussions and propose technical improvements.
- Integrations & Interoperability
- Integrate with internal and external systems (payments, CRM, ERP, third-party APIs).
- Ensure reliable data flows and handle error states and retries gracefully.
- Performance, Security & Reliability
- Optimize backend performance (latency, throughput, resource consumption).
- Apply security best practices (authentication, authorization, OWASP, encryption).
- Build systems that are resilient, fault-tolerant, and highly available.
- Testing & Quality Assurance
- Develop unit, integration, and component tests.
- Collaborate with QA to ensure high-quality releases.
- Automate testing where possible.
- DevOps Collaboration
- Work with DevOps engineers to set up CI/CD pipelines.
- Support cloud deployments (Azure, AWS, GCP) and containerized environments (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Monitor application health, log management, and observability.
- Documentation & Collaboration
- Create clear technical documentation (APIs, data models, architectural diagrams).
- Participate in agile ceremonies (refinement, sprint planning, retrospectives).
- Collaborate closely with product owners, designers, and front-end teams.
Skills & Qualifications
- Strong proficiency in at least one backend language/framework.
- Experience with relational (SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL) or NoSQL databases.
- Understanding of software architecture patterns (CQRS, event sourcing, microservices).
- Familiarity with version control (Git, GitFlow).
- Experience with message queues (Kafka, RabbitMQ) is a plus.
- Knowledge of cloud technologies & containerization.
- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills.
